How We Choose and Evaluate Products
Every product reviewed on Animal Gear Reviews goes through the same structured evaluation process. This page explains exactly how we research, assess, and decide what to recommend — and what we will never do.
Our Evaluation Process
Product Selection
We identify products based on search demand, customer interest, and category gaps. We do not select products based on commission rates or brand relationships. A product is included because pet owners are actively looking for information about it — not because a brand reached out to us.
Customer Feedback Research
We systematically analyze verified customer reviews across Amazon and other retail platforms. We look for patterns in what users consistently praise, what they consistently criticize, and how the product performs across different use cases and pet types. We weight detailed, verified reviews significantly higher than brief or unverified ones.
Design and Materials Assessment
We evaluate the product's design logic: does the construction make sense for the intended use? Are materials appropriate for contact with animals? Does the form factor match how real pets actually behave? We cross-reference manufacturer specifications with what customers report in practice.
Competitive Comparison
Every product is assessed relative to the alternatives in its category. We map out the key alternatives — different materials, form factors, price points — and position each product honestly within that landscape. A product earns a recommendation when it represents genuine value compared to what else is available.
Who It Suits — and Who It Does Not
We do not try to make every product sound suitable for every buyer. Each review identifies a specific target user and explicitly names who should skip the product. A product that is excellent for one type of pet owner may be the wrong choice for another. We make that clear.
Final Scoring
We rate each product across a consistent set of criteria relevant to its category — typically design, materials, durability, ease of use, value for money, and category-specific factors. Scores reflect our honest assessment based on available evidence, not an attempt to make every product look good.
Our Core Principles
Editorial Independence
No brand, manufacturer, or advertiser influences our coverage decisions or our scores. We have never and will never accept payment, free products, or incentives in exchange for a positive review or for coverage of any kind.
Honest Scoring
Our scores reflect genuine assessment. A product with a moderate durability score has moderate durability — we do not inflate scores to avoid negative impressions. Readers deserve accurate information to make purchasing decisions.
No Invented Claims
We do not write "we tested this product" unless we have. We do not invent ratings, specifications, or user experiences. Every factual claim in our reviews is sourced from manufacturer documentation, verified customer feedback, or authoritative external sources.
Price Transparency
We never display hardcoded prices. Amazon prices change frequently and a static price is misleading. Every review directs readers to check the current price on Amazon directly.
What We Will Always Do
- Disclose affiliate relationships clearly on every page
- Identify who a product is and is not suitable for
- Update reviews when product versions, pricing, or availability changes significantly
- Link to authoritative external sources where relevant
- Correct errors promptly when they are identified
What We Will Never Do
- Accept payment for coverage or positive reviews
- Accept free products in exchange for reviews
- Recommend a product solely because it pays a higher commission
- Display hardcoded prices or star ratings pulled from Amazon
- Use redirect links or cloaked URLs for Amazon affiliate links
- Publish invented specifications, scores, or customer experiences
